We caught 6 carp together In 2 weeks! Catfish were heavily present, so we could only fish with tiger nuts. We found it very unfortunate that we were informed about this a week before departure! We unfortunately couldn't fish as we are used to. Our first experience at a French paylake was disappointing due to the catfish.

14 fish, with the largest being a 21.4kg mirror carp and a 19.2kg mirror carp. The rest were around 17kg, with 2 smaller ghost carp of 12 and 14kg in between.

We had great success using tiger nuts and feeding with particles (corn, peas, hemp, and buckwheat), which we prepared on-site. Ultimately, each of us caught 23 carp with minimal bycatch (1 catfish, 2 bream, and 1 tench). Boilies and fancy rigs simply do not perform as well as the natural feed of particles and tiger nuts on a simple hair rig. (We all eventually fished using semi-stiff rigs with a barbless Korda longshank and shot on the hook. These hooked the best and remained securely in place even during intense fights without causing unnecessary damage). In total, we caught over 700kg of carp, including 8 fish over 15kg, 15 fish between 12-15kg, and 33 fish under 10kg.

Unfortunately, the water level, as in all of Central Europe, was very low. I fished about 150m from the shore in a depth of 60-70cm! However, this did not stop the fish from feeding. On the contrary, it was sometimes quite exhausting! On average, I caught 10 fish per day. The largest fish weighed 19 kg. This might have been because the water in my swim was very shallow. But, as always, it was very beautiful, and we'll come back next year.

This time we fished at swims 1 and 2, which have a good range of water area in front of them. Unfortunately, due to prolonged drought, the water level was estimated to be at least 60cm below where it was in 2026, when we last visited. While this isn't anyone's fault, it is stressful for the fish. Using the bait boat, netting, and similar actions often required donning waders, which made solo fishing more challenging. This issue is even more pronounced at shallow water swims like 14-19, 3, 4, etc., especially as colder/wetter seasons approach and you're fishing alone. Steg swims like 11-14 now have almost no water under the platform, and it stands approximately 1.3m above the 'water.' We heard from other anglers that the water depth at spots like heads 7, 20, 6, and 9 was well below 1m, leading to situations like swim 9 needing to relocate to 6. During the week, we managed to catch 6 carp at swim 1 and 11 carp at swim 2. Among these, 9 fish were over 20kg, with one exceeding 25kg. The average weight was therefore quite high; even the other fish weren't under 15kg. In addition, we caught a total of 7 catfish, which, while providing some fun as bycatch, often disrupted other rods with their thrashing escapes. The two fans at the main house operated nearly continuously, which is beneficial for the fish but adds noise around the gites and swims 1&2. "If waterfalls are your thing, then you'll appreciate the ambiance F605" Overall, it was quite a mixed week, mainly due to the weather - rotating winds, air pressure, daytime temperatures reaching over 30°C, and nighttime dropping to around 10°C. We have visited Gaulois several times before and would return again, but choosing the timing and swims under consideration of weather conditions is becoming increasingly important. From the administration, we would suggest keeping a close eye on the water level and possibly limiting the availability of all swims. Some removal of catfish could also be beneficial for the lake. The lake holds an incredible amount of fish - roach, sunfish, pike, and likely hundreds of catfish. This, coupled with feed addition, might lead to long-term negative effects if the water level doesn't recover. It would be unfortunate for what Gaulois is known for: its excellent stock of carp. One critical note is that apparently two different maps showing fishing zones are circulating; one used for reservations through The Carp Specialist and another owned by the lake operators. Following the latter, areas around swims such as 3-6 and possibly swim 9 were divided differently compared to what is indicated on the website. This should not happen, in our view. Reservations should clearly reflect the current information presented on the website. Although this did not affect us at swims 1&2, a colleague at swim 4 was significantly impacted by this issue.
