Successful winter carp fishing holiday on High Mill Lake for Bart!
We keep saying it from The Carp Specialist: High Mill Lake is horribly underestimated by most big-fish hunters... Richard Lous already had a great session there this fall and Bart de Blanck and his wife Petra enjoyed it between Christmas and New Year of a wonderfully relaxed (and extraordinarily successful) winter session on carp lake. He writes to us the following:
After the Christmas Eve party without sleeping we immediately left for Brigueuil in the promised carp country France for a trip on the carp lake High Mill Lake in a stretch of 466 miles for a 5 day winter session at swim 12 with the fisherman's cottage.
Arrived there around 9:30 am and at first I didn't put the fishing rods in the water on Christmas Day, but got some sleep. However, once you see a carp lake you obviously want to fish. Fortunately I changed my mind and decided to throw in 2 rods and to feed some boilies for the first day and the day after we will start to use the bait boat. Since my wife and I have been coming to High Mill Lake for several years now (except last year due to corona), I already know a little where the carp usually stays in the winter period, so there was no doubt where to drop the 2 rods on that first day.
After 10 minutes, and while rigging the 2nd rod, I already got a run. Immediately hit and a very nice long linear carp 38.58 pounds. Yesss, that's a very good start! A few hours later I got a slow run, once the rod was in my hand and after setting the hook I immediately felt the unwieldy slow pull, this could be a very good one. And indeed, after a fairly long heavy but not heavy fight, one of the 3 biggest fish is on the unhooking mat at a weight of 62.39 pounds called “Twin Scale”. Just after the photoshoot and the release of this beautiful mirror carp, the 2 bite alarm screams and I also land a beautiful mirror carp of 41.67 pounds.
That was it for the first day because both of us are totally nuts and had something to celebrate/drink at the start of our session with such weights. So time for a drink and about 30 oysters. The following days I regularly get bites, especially between noon and 10 p.m. with some nice weights, a mirror carp of 42.55 pounds and a leather carp 47.84 pounds. The last day I catch 2 more carp, one at the nice weight of 54.01 pounds called “Parrott” and as a bonus I also got the first fish of the session back, that row carp of 38.58 pounds.
In total I get 15 runs and land 12 carp with some bigger ones. All carp were caught on Eddy Sterckx's Bonbon Rouge boilie and from the deeper part of the High Mill Lake carp lake. We are of course already looking forward to the next winter session there between Christmas and New Year 2022. We highly recommended High Mill Lake and very friendly English owners Tracey and Andy.
